Flower essences therapy

The term ‘Flower Remedy’ refers to the products developed by Dr Edward Bach, who was a bacteriologist and homoeopath.

He believed that illness and diseases is a result of mental or emotional imbalance and that the energetic property of plants could be used to correct that imbalance.

After lots of research, he came to the conclusion that the healing effects of plants might also be contained in the morning dew found on the flowers.

Dr Bach believed that harmful emotions were the main cause of disease and he classified the various emotions into seven main categories. These seven categories were then divided further into 38 negative feelings where each plant is related to a certain feeling.

How the remedies are prepared and used:

Flower Remedies and Essences are liquid preparations created by boiling parts of plants in spring water or by placing the flowers onto the surface of spring water and leaving them to infuse by natural sunlight for a period of time. After these processes, the water is preserved and used as a remedy.

Bach Flower Remedies are made of flowers found mostly in Britain.

The Remedies are sold in concentrated form and a person can either take some drops directly on the tongue or dilute the concentrate in water.

The standard way of mixing the remedies into a treatment bottle is to put two drops of each selected remedy into an empty 30ml dropper bottle, and then put this up with still mineral water.

If you keep this cool (preferably in the fridge) and if you are careful not to let the dropper touch your tongue, then the water will stay fresh for two to three weeks for which the treatment bottle will last.

You only need to add alcohol if the bottle will not be kept cool - if, for example, you intend to carry it in your pocket all the time. The only reason you need the alcohol is to help stop the water from going off. A teaspoon of brandy - about 5mls - is enough for this purpose. Alternatively you can use cider vinegar or vegetable glycerin.

Unlike drugs, if you take Bach flower remedies for a long time your body will still benefit as long as it is the right remedy for you.

When you take drugs, the body creates a tolerance level by natural adjustment to the different drug components which increases when the threshold is reached.

But the case differs when using remedies; when using remedies you may develop greater strength and self reliance and your need for the remedy disappears by time due to the balance the remedy will create.

“The action of these remedies is to raise our vibrations and open up our channels for the reception of our spiritual self, they are able like beautiful music or any uplifting thing which gives us inspiration, to raise our very natures and bring us nearer to our souls and by that they act to bring us peace and relieve our sufferings.

They cure, not by attracting disease, but by flooding our bodies with the beautiful vibrations of nature".

These were Dr Bach's words in trying to elaborate how remedies work during one of his lectures which took place in 1934.

The Bach Flower Remedies simply work by flooding out negative feelings and emotions. Sometimes the emotions that are dealt with have been repressed for some time and in order to clear them they have to be cleansed from the system first.

To decide on which remedy to take it is always important to listen carefully to the complaint the person is coming with, For example, imagine someone who says that she is anxious about a job interview and is displaying or showing that anxiety by becoming irritated with her family whenever they don't do things the same way that she would. The remedies for such a condition would be Mimulus to deal with the anxiety and fear, and Beech to deal with the intolerance which she is having as a concomitant feeling/behavior.

Coming to explore the side effects of the remedy, we find that the remedies do not have any side effect whatsoever and they can never make a symptom appear, but it may be that the remedies are “stirring up” suppressed feelings that need to be cleansed before complete healing can be achieved.

If things are getting worse in spite of the remedies this may mean one of two things. Either the remedies have not yet had time to work (two or more months or even years of regular dosage may be needed to deal with deep-rooted problems which have been there for years). It is worth noting that the longer and the more persistent you have had the problem, the longer it will take you to get “cured” from it and vice versa. This time span is important to keep on mind in order not to get disappointed or have false hopes.

The second option for which a remedy will not work or you will not differ much after taking it, is if the selection was wrong and therefore, the disease/negative emotions continued to get worse as the remedy did not stop the deterioration.

It is worth noting that even if the wrong remedies are being taken this only means that no improvements will be noted - they will never make anything worse.

Rescue Remedy:

It is a widely used remedy in cases of shock, fears, or when you generally need something to boost you. It is a combination of five of the Bach Flower Remedies which are Impatiens, Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum, Rock Rose and Clematis.
This remedy can be used on tongue or on skin in cases of minor burns or irritations.
Most commonly people use it even if they hear bad news or they feel anything is too much to handle and feeling sudden things such as heart palpitations and nausea, dizziess...etc. Worth noting is that Rescue remedy seldom cures, it usually contains the emotional state but for healing purposed the whole case needs to be considered.
